I enjoyed trying a variety of coffees from The Coffee Roaster, and I’m so excited to share my thoughts with you today. Here’s a quick high-level overview of what I sampled and my thoughts:
- Kenya Peaberry: Bright, citrusy, and well-balanced, with just the right amount of acidity to create a lively cup.
- Ethiopia: Earthy and smooth, with floral citrus notes and a vibrant acidity that made it a standout.
- House Blend: Nutty, bold, and slightly darker, this would make an excellent base for espresso drinks.
- Panama: Medium roast with subtle chocolate undertones—a delightful and smooth daily drinker.
- Sumatra: Deeply dark and stormy in flavor, but it mellowed beautifully with a little creamer and adjustment to the brew ratio.
Now let’s dive into the details of each coffee and explore my favorites!
Kenya Peaberry
Peaberry coffees are always a treat, and this one was no exception. I’m already a fan of this bean variety for its concentrated flavor, and The Coffee Roaster’s Kenya Peaberry was everything I hoped it would be.
From the first sip, the vibrant citrus notes hit me in the best way—bright and refreshing without being overpowering.
The orange-like flavors shone through clearly, and the acidity brought an energizing liveliness to the cup. Yet somehow it was balanced by a smooth body that kept it from feeling too sharp.
I’d recommend this coffee to anyone who loves fruity, high-acidity coffees that still feel polished and balanced. It’s a great morning brew for days when you need a little extra pep in your step.
Ethiopia
Ethiopian coffees hold a special place in my heart, and this one did not disappoint. This Ethiopian variety was earthy and smooth, with a floral brightness that lingered pleasantly on the palate.
What stood out most to me was the citrus-forward acidity—it was vibrant yet delicate, complementing the earthy undertones without overwhelming them. This coffee had a complexity that made me slow down and savor each sip, appreciating how the flavors unfolded over time.
If you’re looking for a coffee that feels both grounded and bright, this is an excellent choice.
Sumatra
Dark coffee lovers, this one’s for you. The Sumatra roast was incredibly bold, with deep, earthy flavors that I can only describe as “dark and stormy.” It was too intense for me to drink black, but with a splash of milk, it transformed into something beautifully smooth and comforting.
I also experimented with using fewer coffee grounds when brewing this roast, and it made a world of difference. Toning down the brew strength helped mellow the intensity while still allowing the coffee’s robust flavors to shine. If you’re hesitant about dark roasts, this method might help you enjoy them more!
House Signature Blend
The House Blend surprised me with its bold nuttiness. It leaned darker than the other coffees I tried, with a flavor profile that felt strong and straightforward. While it didn’t have the chocolate-forward notes found in the Panama roast (highlighted below), it offered a sturdy, reliable cup that I could see working perfectly as an espresso base.
I see this coffee being perfect with a splash of steamed milk or even as the foundation for a cappuccino, which is probably why it’s a customer favorite. It’s the kind of coffee that feels comforting and familiar, like something you’d reach for on a busy morning when you need a no-nonsense brew.
Panama – Tierras Atlas Washed SHB EP
This Panama coffee was a delightful medium roast that quickly became a favorite. The first thing I noticed was the subtle chocolate aroma—it wasn’t overpowering, but just strong enough to draw me in.
The chocolate undertones carried over into the flavor, creating a smooth and satisfying cup.
I found it more balanced and enjoyable than the House Blend, with a touch of sweetness that made it feel indulgent without being too heavy.
This coffee is perfect for those who enjoy medium roasts with a hint of richness.
Each coffee I tried from The Coffee Roaster offered a unique experience and I highly recommend this small batch roaster.
Their attention to detail, high-quality beans, and thoughtful roasting process shine through in every cup.
