Based out of Honduras, Spirit Animal Coffee is on a mission to provide both job and financial stability to local coffee farmers and workers.

 

Honduras is in the top ten largest producing coffee countries in the world (currently sitting at #6), yet only 10% of the revenue from the coffee trade stays in the country. 

 

Spirit Animal Coffee is looking to change that by moving the entire supply chain into Honduras. And, by prioritizing sustainable farming practices, the brand ensures the preservation of the surrounding ecosystem and the well-being of the local farming communities.

 

But, it goes beyond the actual farming of the coffee. All of the coffee from Spirit Animal is not just grown in Honduras, it is also processed, roasted, and packaged, before shipping anywhere in the world.

Spirit Animal Coffee Review

 

For this review, I ordered the Parainema whole bean coffee as well as the Sample Set of the Bestsellers and Espresso Blend. 

 

Since the coffee comes from Honduras, I wanted to note that I was pleasantly surprised by the shipping. In total, it took about two weeks from my date of order to receive the coffee.

 

I received updates when the order shipped, landed in the US, and was ultimately out for delivery to my address. So it’s not as fast as Amazon, but still pretty good considering the coffee comes from another country. 

 

But enough shipping talk…let’s talk about the coffee…

 

 

The Parainema is a unique coffee that transports you to a tropical paradise. 

 

Nestled within the lush landscapes of Central America, this unique coffee varietal offers a mesmerizing flavor profile that captures the essence of the region.

 

Grown at a high altitude of 4,200 feet (approximately 1,300 meters), the Parainema coffee exhibits a distinct character that sets it apart. 

 

As you inhale the aroma, the hints of peach, honey, and raspberry dance in the air, enticing your senses. The first sip reveals a delightful symphony of flavors, where the coffee notes intertwine, creating a harmonious and refreshing experience on the palate.

 

It’s a truly delicious medium-to-light roast coffee that is very smooth.

 

But, what makes Parainema coffee truly remarkable is the dedication and expertise of the farmer: Raquel Giron Rosales who was born and raised in Yoro, Honduras. As a fourth-generation coffee producer, Giron and her family have been producing coffee in Honduras for years. 

 

The journey from bean to cup is a meticulous process, and Spirit Animal Coffee takes great care in roasting the beans for this variety to perfection. 

 

This light-medium roast strikes a delicate balance, preserving the natural sweetness and acidity while enhancing the inherent tropical flavors. 

 

The result is a cup of coffee that is both vibrant and smooth, enticing you to savor each sip.

 

The Sample Set from Spirit Animal Coffee is really the way to go though. 

 

The trial pack includes 10 single-serve drip bags (similar to those from Copper Cow Coffee). Each sample set includes the New Espresso Blend as well as their bestsellers at the time. 

 

My sample set included the following coffees: 

• IHCAFE-90
• Bourbon
• Catuai 
• Espresso Blend

 

At the time of publication, the sample set includes the Parainema, IHCAFE-90, Bourbon, and Espresso Blend.

 

Honestly, all of the coffees in the sample set were great, but if I had to go back and pick just one my favorite was the Bourbon. 

 

With notes of cacao, tropical fruits, white wine, and hazelnut it is a captivating flavor profile that gives a balance of sweetness and acidity. 

 

Bourbon coffee typically boasts a medium to full body, and Spirit Animal Coffee’s Bourbon is no exception to that. Offering a satisfyingly rich and velvety mouthfeel, this coffee is full-bodied and luxurious. 

 

 

 

The IHCAFE-90 is a coffee variety developed in Honduras by the Instituto Hondureño del Café (IHCAFE). It has gained popularity among coffee enthusiasts for its exceptional cup profile.

 

It’s almost like drinking the heart of Honduras, it’s that much of a coffee icon in the country. 

 

With notes of tangerine, blackberries, and black tea the IHCAFE-90 is a harmonious balance of flavors that is well-rounded and gentle on your palate. 

 

The Catuai from Spirit Animal Coffee is a single-origin grown by Yuliana Hernandez in Marcala, Honduras. 

 

Catuai is a popular Arabica coffee variety known for its exceptional cup profile. It is a hybrid of the Caturra and Mundo Novo varieties, resulting in a coffee that combines the best attributes of both.

 

It features a medium body with a well-balanced combination of sweetness and acidity. You can expect notes of honey, citrus, and floral, creating a delightful flavor experience. 

 

With the Catuai you will enjoy its well-balanced flavors, bright acidity, and smoothness.

 

 

Last up is the newest blend to Spirit Animal Coffee, the Espresso Blend.

 

Joining together two beans from Finca Montecillos and Finca Cerro Azul, you will find a wide array of flavor notes that somehow all work together beautifully. With citrus, honey, sweet fruit, floral, and peach this blend is really unique and delicious. 

 

Since this is a dark roast, I enjoyed this best with some milk. But, the Espresso Blend is a versatile coffee that would be great by itself or used in a milk-based coffee drink.
